THE black Mountain Experience: Orok/Namanga Hills
The dark rock, the black mountain, Oldonyo Orok is exactly the reason you go out there to explore. You get just the right amounts of everything: challenge, views, nature, travel and discovery.
We depart in the early morning from Nairobi to Namanga town, border town between Kenya and Tanzania. On arrival at Maili Tisa, we meet our guide and get ready for our hike up with a few warm up stretches. Hiking this mountain has this gradual revelation of views and features that keeps you yearning for more and more as you scale up. By the time we are summiting, the birds eye view of Namanga town, the plains below, Mt Longido and Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the wide expanse extending to Amboseli National Park, you are truly stoked and happy for having made it that far up.
We then get back to Namanga to start our onward journey to Arusha, where we will be spending our night. Our home will be the Manor House for the next two nights.
Day 2
We wake up to light stretches to ease the soreness of yesterday’s hike before a sumptuous alfresco breakfast, weather permitting. Afterwards we go swimming at the Maji Sanctuary. After lunch, we visit the Arusha Cultural Centre before coming back for dinner and overnight. It is also our chance to experience Arusha by night.
Day 3
We depart for Nairobi after lunch, arriving in the early evening.
